Corporate training is a $160 billion industry in North America!!!
… Yet the facts are that 15% of people don’t try a new concept after they learn it, and 70% try but fail or give up.
The problem is NOT the trainees … it’s the style and approach the trainer takes to making it STICK!!
Richard Branson says it well:
‘Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.’
Here are 10 must, must, must haves to make it stick!
The Right Tools
It is vital to use the right tools for the right participants. Everybody learns differently. One size does not fit all in training!
Make It Relevant
Make the training relevant to the participant’s work and everyday life. If it’s not relevant, they won’t care … and it’s lost.
Small classes creates a personal and highly tailored training experience.
Less Is More
Shorter bursts of information will keep an audience engaged and willing to learn.
Repeating the message often will reinforce it and will make sure that it sticks.
Create A SAFE Space
Create a space that is open, honest, and non-judgemental. Give them the confidence to speak transparently.
Provide Support and Feedback
Provide insight without prejudice and help everyone to develop. Give constructive feedback. Peer feedback is also incredibly helpful!!
Having fun while learning helps us retain information better because the process is enjoyable and memorable.
Keep It Active
Research has proven that there is increased content retention for participants in active learning (both physically and mentally). Development of critical thinking, and problem-solving are two other benefits.
Disciplined reflection, asking: What did I learn, and how I can I live that today? The learning process shouldn’t end when the training does.
