Creative thinking

Eureka!

August 16, 2018 By Marilyn Barefoot Leave a Comment

Eureka!

The eureka moment refers to a common human experience of suddenly understanding a previously incomprehensible problem or concept. Some research describes it as an Aha!

Some of the most amazing ideas in history came to their inventors while they were daydreaming.

The eureka moment, or the aha, is the culmination of a pre-conscious process known as incubation.

Incubation is a stage in which the thinker has temporarily set aside his or her attempts to solve a problem, and has turned to other thoughts. But behind the curtain of consciousness, the brain is still working.

Most of us have had the eureka experience – that flash of insight that suddenly explains something, or shows us how to solve a problem.

A very famous Eureka moment is that of Newton’s upon the fall of an apple from a tree. If it wasn’t for a plague that had closed the University of Cambridge in England, Isaac Newton wouldn’t have that moment in his family’s estate in Lincolnshire. His realization came when he was strolling around the farm and noticed that an apple fell down instead of remaining suspended in the air. This experience of Newton paved the way for the development of the theory of universal gravitation.

The next time you’re stuck on a problem or decision, try incubating it. Think about it for a while, and then turn your attention to something else entirely! A great idea will come to you when you least expect it!

Whether The Weather Creates Creativity

July 24, 2018 By Marilyn Barefoot Leave a Comment

whether the weather creates creativity

It’s not surprising that warm weather has positive effects on the mind, body and soul … but does it also affect our creativity?

Studies show that not only is the human brain more mentally fit, but we are also our most creative selves when out in the warmth.

Researchers have found the ideal temperature for human creativity and a positively functioning brain is 72 degrees Fahrenheit or 22 degrees Celsius, which is just about room temperature.

When the temperature drops below the 72-degree sweet spot, people are less open-minded and creative, and their moods and brain functioning declines.

We actually lose some of our potential to be physically and mentally fit and more creative when we are in colder environments.

Researchers outfitted a group of office workers at an insurance company in Orlando, Florida, with portable temperature sensors and loaded their computers with productivity tracking software that measured total time spent typing and typing errors, among other things.

Measurements were taken every 15 minutes for more than three weeks.

The findings … higher temperatures (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit or 25 degrees Celsius) were associated with greater productivity than lower temperatures (around 68 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 degrees Celsius).

Warmer workers typed 150% more and made 44% fewer mistakes than their chillier colleagues.

The so what … Warm environments can help spur productivity and creativity hot streaks.

Apparently, Picasso preferred a nice 72 F/22C degree day with a slight, cool breeze!

There Is No Such Thing As A Bad Idea … Bulls#*t!

July 17, 2018 By Marilyn Barefoot Leave a Comment

No such things as a bad idea

CORRECTION … THERE IS SUCH THING AS A BAD IDEA

Really!? How many times have we all heard this in a brainstorming session!

In my humble opinion, this statement is 100% bulls#*t!!  … and I openly say just that to everyone in my sessions!

YES … YES, YES, there are bad ideas in a brainstorming session … often there are hundreds!

BUT … here’s the thing … bad ideas are the building blocks to amazing ones!

There are two reasons why bad ideas are necessary for great ideas:

  1. Ideas that solve a problem in a unique way are usually a combination of existing ideas, many of which may seem bad at first.
  2. Accepting that most of our ideas will be bad will help us move on to new ideas faster and more easily.

Like most things in life, creative problem solving is a trial-and-error process … that requires failure.

While bad ideas can be building blocks to creative thought, sometimes they are in fact really good ideas — just ones that nobody else understands yet.

If I give you ten bad ideas, on the surface they don’t have any value. But, if the 10 bad ideas lead you to think of 1 great idea … then the process was exceptionally valuable.

In the case of Norman Lawson, he had 39 bad ideas before he invented WD-40 … Water Displacement, 40thFormula.

Always remember that ideas that were once deemed bad and ridiculed, have led to some of the greatest inventions in history, like human flight, electricity and the umbrella!
